COLUMBUS, OHIO - Starting in early May each year, thousands of sea turtle hatchlings break through their shells along beaches on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States. Their first decision in life is crucial --- how to head back to the sea. Often confused by bright lights in coastal homes, the turtles can make the wrong choice. Rather than follow the moon back to the ocean, they head toward artificial lights from houses and streets, resulting in an almost certain death.

"Sea turtle organizations and dedicated volunteers worldwide are concerned about artificial lights in homes and on the streets that confuse baby sea turtles," says Ken Kubus, coastal products manager for Simonton Windows. "Light pollution can be deterred when homeowners have grey-tinted glass in windows facing the beachfront. This type of ‘turtle glass' helps dull the impact of light on the beach from homes and businesses so that the hatchlings turn toward the moon --- the brightest source in the sky --- to lead them back to the ocean."

Simonton Windows, one of the nation's leading suppliers of vinyl new construction and replacement windows and patio doors, offers Turtle Glass as an option in many of its product lines. The company's impact-resistant Simonton StormBreaker Plus® product line offers Turtle Glass as an option for windows and doors installed in projected severe weather areas of the country.

"This is more than just a code-driven product choice for coastal homeowners and businesses," says Kubus. "Many people are compelled by their conscious to select this product option. When people reside near the beach they feel a special affinity for taking care of it, and the wildlife that occupies the oceanfront.

"Incorporating Turtle Glass into a home or commercial facility permits residents to actively play a part in the safety of the mother turtles and their new hatchlings. Many people go far beyond this step of adding special glass packages to their home by making sure to use external red lighting or low-pressure sodium-vapor lighting that is less intrusive for sea turtles."

Advice offered online by Sea Turtle Restoration Network, Sea Turtle Preservation Society and the Sea Turtle Conservancy all suggest that there are steps coastal residents and visitors can take during hatching season (which usually runs from May 1 to October 31 each year) including:

- Close any opaque curtains or blinds after dark to cover windows visible from the beach.
- Do not disturb markers or screening over turtle nests that are being protected.
- Watch turtles crawling to/from the ocean or laying eggs from at least 30 feet away so as not to disturb the turtles.
- Avoid walking on beach dunes, a popular area for nesting sea turtles.
- Do not litter on the beach. Fishing lines, trash, even cigarette butts can harm the animals along the beach and their natural environment.

"There are plenty of natural threats to sea turtles that impede their chance of survival without adding in human beings," says Kubus. "Sea turtles have predators such as raccoons and crabs, plus they must survive with plastic and oil debris in the ocean and negotiate climate changes. Artificial lighting and human beach activity are just some of the reasons why only an estimated one in 1,000 to 10,000 sea turtles will survive to adulthood off the United States coasts. Incorporating Turtle Glass into oceanfront windows can truly have a positive effect on the lives of these animals."

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
Think Replacement Window ROI During National Home Improvement Month

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Although springtime weather conditions came early to most of the country this year, May is the official time to work on home projects during National Home Improvement Month. Before you invest your "sweat equity" with home upgrades, spend time determining which improvement tasks around the house will provide you with the most return-on-investment in the long run.

According to the Remodeling 2011-12 Cost vs. Value Report* (www.costvsvalue.com), the replacement of older, inefficient windows with upscale vinyl replacement windows is one of the ten most popular projects with payback for homeowners. The study reports that a vinyl replacement window project has a higher projected return-on-investment than several other popular home upgrade projects, including a bathroom remodel or addition, a major kitchen remodel, the addition of a master suite or the replacement of the roof.

Adding energy-efficient, low-maintenance vinyl windows to the home can have an average payback of 69.1 percent according to the Cost vs. Value Report. The same study shows that the average cost for such a replacement (involving 10 double-hung 3-by-5 vinyl windows with Low-E glass and simulated woodgrain trim) is $14,328.

"According to this study, the cost recouped at the time of selling the home with these new windows would be about $9,898," says Gary Pember, vice president of marketing for Simonton Windows. "Even more importantly, homeowners investing in this type of remodeling project can save energy costs every single day once the new windows are installed."

Homes Built Before 1978

For many homeowners, a window replacement project can be especially important if their homes were built prior to 1978. That's when lead-based paint stopped being used in homes. For homes constructed before 1978 there's a very real possibility that the paint surrounding the windows is producing dangerous lead dust that can harm family members.

"The potential dangers of lead dust poisoning from window frames in homes built prior to 1978 is frightening - especially for households with small children and pregnant women," says Pember. "Just the normal opening and closing of windows in these homes can disturb microscopic lead dust that can be extremely dangerous to the health of those living in the home."

According to information released recently by the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) it's more sensible for health-conscious families to replace their older windows than repair them. The new study (reported at http://nchh.org/tabid/139/default.aspx?ContentID=142) compares window replacement to window repair as a strategy for reducing lead paint hazards in the home.

The study evaluated homes that either replaced or repaired windows 12 years ago to determine which strategy resulted in lower dust lead levels on the floor and window sills --- key areas where children can come in contact with lead dust. Study results show a significantly lower amount of lead dust in homes where all the windows were replaced --- 41% lower floor dust levels and 51% lower window sill dust levels --- compared to homes where windows had been repaired.

Simonton Windows fully supports the education of homeowners related to lead safety issues. The company's www.simonton.com/leadsafe microsite and informative YouTube video (available at http://www.youtube.com/simontonwindows) are available free for homeowners to gain additional information on this important safety issue.

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
April 1 - 7: National Window Safety Week

COLUMBUS, OHIO - As part of National Window Safety Week, April 1-7, 2012, the experts at Simonton Windows recommend parents of youngsters adopt an extremely cautious attitude with children and the windows in their home.
"Children should be taught at a young age to stay away from windows for their own safety," says Gary Pember, vice president of marketing for Simonton Windows. "Parents can help safeguard children in the home by keeping furniture (including cribs) and anything else a child can climb on, away from windows. And, if your home has Double Hung windows, open only the top part of the window that children cannot reach, to allow for ventilation."

Pember offers these tips for window safety in the home:

Tip #1 - Remember the primary purpose of a window screen is to keep insects outside. Never push on screens, as they will not support the weight of a child or family pet.

Tip #2 - Lock windows when not in use to protect against intruders and make it more difficult for curious young children to open windows.

Tip #3 - Do not paint or nail windows shut. Every window in the home that is designed to be opened should be operational in case of an emergency.

Tip #4 - Refrain from nailing or attaching decorative lights to the interior or exterior of window frames.

Tip #5 - Plant shrubs or grass, and place "soft landscaping" like bark or mulch, directly underneath windows to help lessen the impact should someone accidently fall out of a window.

Pember also recommends that homeowners make certain that their homes have windows with clear openings that meet egress requirements in the living spaces as required by state and local building codes. "Egress windows provide emergency exits in your home during a fire," says Pember. "Make sure your home has the proper amount of egress windows in every room used as a bedroom and on any floor or basement level with habitable living space."

Families with small children should pay special attention to windows and patio doors. Start with practicing home emergency fire drills. Show them the fastest safety route to the outside and make certain children know under what circumstances to use a window to exit a home. Since small children tend to "hide" from fire, make sure they understand how important it is to safely and quickly exit the home should a fire occur.

"If a door is hot to the touch or not safe to exit through during a fire, then both children and adults should exit through an open window," says Pember. "Unless it is absolutely necessary, do not to break the window glass. Doing so could cause injury. During family safety drills, show children how to operate windows and how to use chain escape ladders that should be kept in all bedrooms located above ground level. Also establish a designated meeting place for the family outside the home."

For more window safety tips, call 1-800-SIMONTON to request a free copy of the easy-to-read, eight-page booklet, "A few things to think about when thinking about your home."

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
Driftwood: Fashion Color for Clothing and Homes

COLUMBUS, OHIO - According to the Pantone® "Fashion in Color Report for Spring of 2012," Driftwood is one of the top 10 colors for clothing choices.* That's no surprise to folks at Simonton Windows who have seen Driftwood emerge over the years as one of the most popular color choices on exterior vinyl window frames in the Decorum® by Simonton collection.

"In this case, what works in clothing fashion also works in home fashion design," says Kate Smith, chief color maven at Sensational Color. "Driftwood is the ideal color complement in so many ways. The earthy, natural blend of beige and gray provides both the ideal backdrop for adding splashes of color in other areas of clothing and the home, along with serving as a stand-out color by itself."

The Decorum by Simonton collection of color and finish options on vinyl window and patio door frames was launched to provide homeowners with colorful options to express themselves in their homes. The beachy Driftwood option has grown over the years to one of the most popular choices for home exterior window frames for both new construction and replacement window projects.

Adaptable Driftwood Color
"Driftwood is an adaptable color," says Smith. "It's subtle and elegant by itself. But, when added to a home exterior it blends in really well with different siding colors and options, such as brick and stone to create a cohesive ‘whole home' fashion statement."

Smith points out that there are many similarities between fashion and home design. "In both situations you try to select a main color that you can accent with other colors or accessories," says Smith. "In fashion, this may be a Driftwood-colored dress highlighted by a bright tangerine scarf or colorful jewelry. In a home project, you can accent your Driftwood-colored windows with bright green shutters, unique hardware options or woodgrain finishes on the interior of the frame."

Interior options in the Decorum by Simonton collection include Antique Cherry, Maple and Contemporary woodgrains plus white and tan.

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Simonton Windows, one of the nation's leading vinyl window and patio door manufacturers, encourages homeowners to educate themselves about possible poison exposure from lead-based paints and products used in the original construction of older homes. Experts at Simonton especially recommend that homeowners hire contractors certified in lead safe practices who can analyze and safely remove older windows coated with lead-based paint as part of a replacement project.
"National Poison Prevention Week (March 18-24, 2012) is the ideal time to shine the spotlight on proper procedures for lead-safe practices and other steps targeted at preventing lead poisoning in children and adults," says Gary Pember, vice president of marketing for Simonton Windows. "Unfortunately when it comes time to replace some older windows, lead paint can be disturbed, creating lead dust and chips. Homeowners should seek out professional contractors who are trained and certified to follow specific work practices to help prevent lead contamination inside, outside, and around the home during remodeling work. This includes replacing older windows."

Pember reminds homeowners that danger from lead poisoning doesn't come just from the process of replacing older windows in the home. "The friction created by opening and closing windows and doors coated in lead-based paint can generate lead dust, which may contaminate the household," says Pember. "This harmful dust can be inhaled and inadvertently spread to other areas of the home. An estimated 30 million homes in the United States today still contain lead-based paint, which can be extremely harmful, especially to children. One of the very best ways to remove the source cause of this dust is through total window replacement. Vinyl windows and doors are a safe, long-lasting, ideal alternative."

A lead safety awareness video created by Simonton Windows is available for viewing at www.YouTube.com/simontonwindows to educate homeowners and encourage them to review their homes for lead paint issues. Simonton also offers free materials and more information on lead safe issues at its website at http://www.simonton.com/leadsafe. The National Poison Prevention Week awareness campaign is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that may disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and schools built before 1978 to be certified. This training includes taking an eight-hour training course from an EPA-approved training provider.

"Simonton supports all educational efforts for contractors and homeowners that can result in safer living environments," says Pember. "We recommend people with houses built prior to 1978 have their homes tested and seek out ways to prevent their families from potential lead poisoning and its harmful effects. This year's 50th annual National Poison Prevention Week is an ideal time to contact your local health departments to ask for information on blood-level testing and educational programs in your area."

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
What to Know Before Buying Replacement Windows

COLUMBUS, OHIO - If you're considering buying replacement windows for your home, then you need to know four important letters: AAMA.
AAMA stands for "American Architectural Manufacturers Association." Why is this organization important to homeowners? Because for almost 50 years AAMA* has provided independent product performance information on windows and doors. And, the AAMA Certification Program is the only program in the window and door industry that requires components used in the finished window and door assembly to pass their own set of performance tests.

AAMA's comprehensive program requires the use of AAMA-accredited labs so that tests are performed by qualified, experienced third-party professionals using properly calibrated equipment. Add to that two unscheduled manufacturing plant inspections each year by AAMA officials and you have a sound program that provides confidence to consumers purchasing AAMA certified products.

"AAMA testing provides many benefits for consumers," says Timothy J. Efaw, testing team leader at Simonton Windows. "Since the testing is done to a specific industry standard, homeowners can evaluate products by comparing standardized testing results.

"Consumers should look for windows and doors that meet the AAMA tests for structural integrity that withstand wind loads. A key tip for consumers is to be suspicious of any window or door product that is not tested. This may mean that the units can't or won't perform to the minimum threshold of standards laid out by the AAMA program. That could be a big red flag when shopping for windows."

Efaw explains that there are various levels of AAMA testing, with the highest, most dependable level being AAMA's Gold Label Certification. "While some companies choose to participate in selective parts of the AAMA curriculum, Simonton Windows participates in every aspect of the stringent Gold Label Certification," says Efaw.

"This is the highest testing level possible from AAMA and ensures that all aspects of manufacturing, quality, training, component certification and overall product certification are in line with all documented AAMA standards. Meeting Gold Label Certification assures a homeowner of purchasing the highest standard of window available in the marketplace that has been rigorously tested according to AAMA requirements for structural strength and resistance to air leakage, water penetration and forced-entry."

What You Get with AAMA Gold Label Certification
In order to receive the AAMA Gold Label Certification, windows and doors must pass independent AAMA-accredited test lab requirements that meet these criteria:
• Prescribed maximum level of air leakage through the assembled unit;
• No water penetration through the unit at a specified simulated wind speed;
• Prescribed levels of structural resistant to wind and other dynamic pressures;
• Life cycle durability requirements as applicable based on the product's performance class designation;
• Component performance verification to AAMA specifications

According to the Professional Builder 2012 Window Survey**, quality counts a great deal when builders select the windows for their home projects. Energy efficiency and quality performance are the top two considerations when builders specify windows. Results of the January 2012 survey also indicate that nearly two-thirds of builder respondents said they offer energy-efficient, high-performance windows for their homes as standard practice.

"As a manufacturer, we use the required AAMA certified profiles and verified components to meet AAMA standards," says Efaw. "We're also ready for our unannounced site visits each year and welcome the opportunity to showcase the manufacturing capabilities at our facilities."

Simonton also controls the quality of the vinyl in its products by extruding its own vinyl compound at SimEx, a vinyl extrusion company affiliated with Simonton Windows. Located in St. Marys, W. Va., the 24-hour SimEx operation supplies rigid vinyl window profiles to Simonton. The vinyl pieces are part of the AAMA verified components required by the AAMA Gold Label Program.

The experts at Simonton Windows offer several free consumer booklets on how to know when it's time to replace your windows, energy efficiency of windows and selecting windows for a new home. The company has also just introduced the new brochure, "Understanding Condensation in Your Home." Consumers may call 1-800-746-6686 to request free copies of these brochures or visit the company's website at http://www.simonton.com/Information/Tips/ for more information.

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - When Daniel and Cathleen Martini purchased a second home in the Moraga Country Club community, they envisioned peaceful days spent close to family members. Instead, they found themselves immediately embroiled in a battle with the local homeowners association to gain approval on their selection of Simonton Windows® to replace nearly 40-year-old leaky single pane metal frame windows.
"We knew when buying this property that replacing the non-functioning and unsafe windows and sliding patio doors was a major priority," says Daniel Martini. "Our intention was to enhance the overall property immediately so it would be an asset to the community. There's simply no way we envisioned the stressful three-month delay in gaining approval of the Simonton products we selected for this home improvement project."

Eager to find energy-efficient, low maintenance and aesthetically-appealing replacement products for their newly-purchased home, Martini carefully researching his options before applying for approval on his product selection. "We determined Simonton Windows to be of superior quality, construction and safety," says Martini. "The Simonton Windows products are rated number one in the industry by J.D. Power and Associates and the choice of many home builders and remodelers. We thought this was a no-brainer and requested approval from the architectural committee."

Martini was stunned to receive not just one, but several subsequent denials for his request. "The committee denied our request because Simonton was not listed as an ‘approved' window company for the community," says Martini. "Unbelievably, there was only one vinyl window manufacturer on the approved list, and our research showed that specific company produces products far below standards to the Simonton products. This simply didn't make sense to us."

Determined to have only the best windows in his home, Martini pursued an appeal through several meetings, lengthy e-mails and phone conversations. "I was so determined to invest my money in the best windows for our home that I was considering legal counsel if they turned me down one more time," says Martini. "There was no reason for them to approve an inferior product when I was eager to purchase the industry's best products for our home."

The outcome? At a September meeting, the Moraga Country Club, which has 521 private residences in its community, finally gave permission for Martini to install the five casement windows and two sliding doors manufactured by Simonton.

"This was hard-fought victory that didn't make sense," says Martini. "Vinyl windows are the top-selling type of replacement windows in the country. In this particular case, we feel that the homeowners association is woefully behind-the-times and needs to update their product knowledge for the benefit of our entire community."

With the work complete, the Martinis, who have become advocates in their community for top-quality vinyl windows and doors, can finally relax. "We believe in the Simonton products that are now in our home," says Martini. "It was well worth the fight to have a product we are confident will provide us with years of comfortable living."

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - Even during these belt-tightening economic times, homeowners are adding value to their homes by continuing to invest in remodeling projects. And, according to the Remodeling 2011-12 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com), the replacement of older, inefficient windows with upscale vinyl replacement windows is one of the ten most popular projects with payback for homeowners.
"Adding energy-efficient, low-maintenance vinyl windows to the home can have an average payback of 69.1 percent according to the Cost vs. Value Report," says Gary Pember, vice president of marketing for Simonton Windows. "The same study shows that the average cost for such a replacement (involving 10 double-hung 3-by-5 vinyl windows with Low-E glass and simulated woodgrain trim) is $14,328.

"The good news is that, according to this study, the cost recouped at the time of selling the home with these new windows would be about $9,898. Even more importantly, homeowners investing in this type of remodeling project can save energy costs every single day once the new windows are installed."

Pember points out that, in the study, vinyl replacement windows had a higher return-on-investment than wood replacement windows. "Today's homeowners are seeking top-quality vinyl windows due to their aesthetic value, low-maintenance features and long-term energy efficiency benefits," says Pember.

According to the study, a vinyl replacement window project for a homeowner had a higher projected return-on-investment than several other popular home upgrade projects, including a bathroom remodel or addition, a major kitchen remodel, the addition of a master suite or the replacement of the roof. A window replacement project can be especially valuable for homes built prior to 1978 due to the importance of replacing lead-based painted windows in older homes.

"Lead-safe awareness should be a priority concern for homeowners," says Pember. "The potential dangers of lead dust poisoning from window frames in homes built prior to 1978 is frightening - especially for households with small children and pregnant women." Simonton offers a dedicated educational website at www.simonton.com/leadsafe and an informative YouTube video clip at www.youtube.com/simontonwindows that provides additional details on the company's lead-safe awareness initiative.

Window Investment
One homeowner who has seen stunning results from replacing his home's windows is Stu McDowell of Evergreen Park, Ill.

A year after replacing 11 old wood windows in his 1954 ranch-style home with ENERGY STAR® qualified Simonton windows, Northern Illinois Gas representatives asked to inspect his gas meter for possible faultiness. Because McDowell's energy usage was so low compared to prior years, the gas company as concerned that his meter was malfunctioning.

"There was nothing wrong with our meter," says McDowell. "It was our window investment paying off. We requested triple pane glass, Krypton gas filler and the Simonton Super Spacer® System in the glass package to maximize the efficiency of the windows. So, at a time when gas prices are soaring all over the country, our bills are like something out of yesteryear!"

Contractor Recommendation
Another homeowner, Mark Clement, in Ambler, Penn., found similarly impressive results when replacing the windows in his 100+ year old home.

"I'm a professional contractor, so I knew to look for quality-built windows when we decided it was time to replace our old mangled windows," says Clement, co-host of MyFixItUpLife radio show and website. "For my money, Simonton is the best brand available in the marketplace. Their multi-chambered construction and fusion-welded corners truly help reduce air and water infiltration into the home.

"As soon as we installed the Simonton windows, we noticed a reduction in our heating and cooling bills, plus our home was definitely more comfortable to live in year-round. I advise all of my customers that replacing older windows with top-quality vinyl windows is definitely a project that has both immediate and long-term benefits."

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products. Instead they remained focused on homeowner trends to deliver what consumers want in 2012.
"We will continue our ongoing consumer-driven product innovations to provide windows that are attractive and energy efficient to meet homeowner needs," says Mark Savan, president and COO of Simonton Windows.

Savan says there is an overall homeowner trend currently underway, in which the company says people are "creating a haven for a home." The pattern involves baby boomers moving from larger homes to smaller, more manageable homes. In those homes they're eager to add in comfort features, like low-maintenance, energy-efficient windows and doors.

A second pattern involves homeowners who previously settled in suburban areas now deciding to move into more urban areas. "These people are looking for greater access to the arts, hospitals and an overall city environment," says Savan. "These resettling homeowners may seek out new windows in their homes for differing reasons, such as sound control, security and energy efficiency."

High Demands for Highly Efficient Windows
Following the federal tax credit incentives offered during the past several years, homeowners have become more educated on energy efficiency benefits and features of windows and doors. "Consumers have become highly educated on ENERGY STAR® qualified products and believe in the value of these products," says Savan.

"At Simonton, we've seen specific consumer requests for ENERGY STAR qualified windows and doors grow consistently this decade. These energy-efficient products make up a strong percent of sales for Simonton and we anticipate consumers will continue asking for them for many years to come."

Homeowners Embrace Vinyl Windows
In addition to increasing their demands for energy efficient windows, Savan believes consumers have elevated their expectations and appreciation of vinyl windows during the past several years. "Along with energy efficiency, consumers want both low maintenance and beauty out of their windows," says Savan. "We're answering that demand with the DecorumTM by Simonton options which offer aesthetic appeal and easy long-term maintenance features."

The Decorum by Simonton product line features attractive exterior color options of Brick, Chocolate, Bronze, Cream, Driftwood, Pine and Tan. On the interior, woodgrain choices of authentic Antique Cherry, Maple and Contemporary Oak are available. And, for homeowners who wish to match up their interior window hardware with lighting fixtures, appliances and other household items, custom metal finish options include Brushed Nickel, Oil-rubbed Bronze, Polished Brass, Dark Bronze, White, Driftwood and Tan.

Savan believes that overall for 2011, Simonton's exceptional high ranking in the J.D. Power and Associates studies reflect both the contractor's and the homeowner's appreciation for the company's value proposition.

"For more than 65 years our company has been dedicated to creating a high-quality, customized product to fit the needs of the individual homeowner," says Savan. "We do that with a high level of service and with the most dependable lead times in the industry. These are the same core values that our company will rely on in 2012 and beyond."

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - The application process is now open for dependent children of employees of Simonton Windows facilities nationwide (including SimEx in W. Va.) to apply for 2012 scholarships for post-high school educational support. Recipients of scholarships will be determined based on financial need, academic achievement, and leadership abilities and activities.
"Since the launch of this program in 2005, Simonton Windows Scholarships have been distributed to 56 students," says Terry Craig, vice president of human resources at Simonton Windows. "The awards distributed during the past six years total $110,125 and we're exceptionally proud to help the children of our employees further their education with these scholarships."

Eligible applicants include those dependents of Simonton employees who have graduated or will be graduating from high school (or the equivalent) and desire to attend a college, university, technical or trade school, vocational school or business school. Additionally, students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate studies may apply.

"A wonderful aspect of this scholarship program is that dependents of Simonton employees may reapply for scholarships throughout their entire time of post-high school studies," says Craig. "This means that if a student previously applied and did not receive a scholarship, or if they received a scholarship in the past and still need financial assistance, they can continue to reapply for consideration each year."

Scholarship awards typically range from $1,500 to $2,500 per person and recipients are chosen by an independent advisory committee. There is no "cap" on the number of recipients each year. Selection of scholarship award recipients is completely dependent on the quality of the applicants. Representatives of Simonton Windows do not participate in the selection process.

The Simonton Windows Scholarship is managed by Our Community's Foundation (the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and Regional Affiliates). Those dependents of Simonton employees interested in applying for the 2012 scholarship opportunity must go to www.pacfwv.com. On the left side of the screen, click on "Find Scholarships" and then click on "Applications and Forms" to locate the "Simonton Windows Scholarship."
Simonton Windows Selected for DOE Cool Energy House Project in Florida

COLUMBUS, OHIO - When builders from around the world come to Orlando, Fla. in February for the 2012 NAHB International Builders' Show® they'll have the opportunity to tour the Cool Energy House project created by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Building America program. Throughout the home, a variety of energy-efficient Simonton Windows help keep this home cooler in the summer and comfortable in the winter.
Located in Windermere, Fla., the 3,800-square foot two-story home, remodeled by Southern Traditions Development, uses technical innovations and leading industry products to achieve peak energy performance. The energy-efficiency upgrades are anticipated to reduce the energy usage of the 1996 custom-built home by more than 50 percent.

"The Building America Retrofit Alliance (BARA), one of the DOE's Building America teams, has pursued this project to demonstrate cost-effective, integrated energy systems that can dramatically reduce annual energy use in existing homes," says Craig Savage, BARA project manager. "Other important benefits include the long-term results of the energy-optimization retrofit efforts in improving the overall building quality, comfort, safety and durability.

"The replacement of older, inefficient windows with top-quality vinyl windows is one of the keys to success for this project. Our decision to include energy-efficient Simonton windows in the Cool Energy House was a critical factor to achieving our high performance goals for the project."

Simonton Windows, which ranked "Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Windows and Doors, Two Years in a Row" in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010-2011 Windows and Patio Doors Satisfaction Studies SM, contributed ENERGY STAR® qualified windows to the home. The double-hung and casement windows are part of the Decorum® by Simonton product line and were ordered with bronze exteriors, colonial sculptured grids and brushed nickel hardware. Some windows in the home feature Antique Cherry woodgrain interiors. Each energy-efficient unit includes an Intercept® Spacer System, Low E double-glazed glass and Argon gas filling in each Insulating Glass Unit (IGU).

Understanding Energy Efficient Windows
To create the energy efficient windows used in the Cool Energy House and in homes across the country, Simonton starts with premium vinyl, which has strong thermal properties that help make an excellent insulator. A glass package is then selected to make up the IGU. This occurs when two or more pieces of glass are separated by a spacer system and then hermetically sealed at the glass edges.

The IGUs in the Cool Energy House windows are constructed with Low E glass. A transparent metallic oxide coating applied to the glass surface allows short-wave energy to pass through but reflects long-wave infrared energy for greater thermal efficiency. For added energy efficiency, the space inside the IGU has been filled with Argon gas, a safe, odorless gas that is six times denser than air. This acts as an added barrier for a higher level of efficiency.

Finally, the Intercept Spacer System used in the windows is made of highly thermally prohibitive materials, placed between the glass panes to further reduce temperature transfer. The unique U-channel design of this spacer system minimized conduction for increased efficiency and comfort in the home. The U-shaped design flexes and contracts, helping reduce seal failure in the IGU.

"The custom-made Simonton windows in this home help showcase the economically sound measures and strategies that can be employed in remodeling projects," says Kim Foy, owner of Southern Traditions, the project contractor. "These practices and products can result in energy efficient, healthy, comfortable and durable homes."

Cool Energy House Project
BARA has worked in close collaboration with the Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings to design and engineer the Cool Energy House to achieve peak energy performance. Key energy-saving measures involved in the home's remodel include: air sealing and re-insulation; window, door, appliance, lighting and pool pump replacement; mechanical system replacement and air duct sealing; and cool roofing and novel building envelope additions.

Interactive tours of the home will be available to builders, remodelers and the general public in February. The demonstration home is designed to help people understand how to integrate technical innovations into a high-performance retrofit project.

For details on the Cool Energy House project in Florida, visit http://www.forresidentialpros.com/video/10476087/an-intro-to-the-cool-energy-house-retrofit.

Simonton Windows produces ENERGY STAR® qualified replacement and new construction windows and doors, including a line of impact-resistant products.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - A commitment to integrity and the use of top-quality products has helped Austin Retrofit secure a 2011 Dealer of the Year Award from Window & Door magazine in the category of "Excellence in Installation." Located in Austin, Texas, the nine-person team at Austin Retrofit has an exemplary reputation for installation of windows and doors.
"We don't cut corners," says John Nelson Sr., president of Austin Retrofit. "Our dedication to quality shines through with every project. As a result, we have not had
a single complaint to the local Better Business Bureau in the past six years, and about 90 percent of our business comes from referrals of satisfied customers."

Nelson believes that several key aspects have led to his company's success in the Austin marketplace. "First, John Jr. and I started this business together so it would be a father-and-son company --- and he's simply incredible," says Nelson. "Second, we have an in-house installation team rather than using subcontractors. This makes all the difference in the world in providing our customers with quality installation. And third, we recommend only the best built windows in the marketplace, so we're setting our customers up for long-term satisfaction."

More than 75 percent of the jobs Austin Retrofit completes include top-quality vinyl Simonton windows. "Simonton is the start-to-finish favorite at our company," says Nelson. "Their energy-efficient products are constructed for long-term durability, they custom-make each window we order, and their speedy delivery allows us to complete our projects in record time.

"Simonton has been recognized repeatedly by J. D. Power and Associates for their overall quality. I always bring this up with customers so that they understand we recommend only the best in the marketplace for their homes."

Quality Products Increase Sales
Nelson speaks from experience when he recommends Simonton products. He used his own home to experiment with different window brands last year. He installed Simonton products on the side of his home needing noise reduction and has showcased his successful selection to potential customers.

"I open the window a few inches for people to hear the outside sounds, then close it and you can't hear a thing," says Nelson. "When I tell people that these are the same standard Simonton windows we routinely install they are extremely impressed. I've actually sold several projects just by having potential customers come to my home to see the difference these windows make."

Quality Installation Counts
Coupled with their commitment to quality products, the Austin Retrofit team is also dedicated to providing exceptional service. Nelson's son and another installer have successfully completed the Simonton Certified Master Installers program and all team members are well versed on lead-safety installation requirements. Austin Retrofit is an EPA Certified Lead Safe Renovation Firm.

The team also follows ASTM and AAMA guidelines on proper sealant and flashing methods, and InstallationMastersTM techniques through the U.S. Department of Energy. John Nelson Jr. has completed the InstallationMasters program and is the only certified instructor and certified installer in the state of Texas.

"Austin Retrofit, like our other 2011 Dealers of the Year, not only represent the best of our industry, they have a lot to teach about best practices," adds John Swanson, Window & Door editor/associate publisher. "We can all learn from the high standards they set for their business and the effort they put into reaching them."

Austin Retrofit is unique in the marketplace in that it employs a crew of certified installers who receive ongoing education and training. The company never sub-contracts any work and all employees are covered by full workers compensation and are bonded and insured. This protects the homeowner from any liability in case of accident or injury.

"We're 110 percent committed to safe workplace installation techniques and making sure our customers and their homes are well protected during a replacement project," says Nelson. "My son and the crew are very particular about how the windows are installed and how they look after installation. Quality is our mantra in every step of our work from initial discussions with the customer to assuring complete job satisfaction. That's the only way we know how to do business."

For additional information on Austin Retrofit, visit www.AustinRetrofit.biz.

COLUMBUS, OHIO - What do houseplants, a boiling pot of pasta and your shower all have in common? They all add moisture to your home's interior. And, while some humidity in the home is good, excessive moisture can be uncomfortable.

"We often get calls from homeowners who are concerned that their windows are ‘sweating' or leaking either inside or outside the home because they see moisture on the glass," says Christopher Burk, technical product manager at Simonton Windows®. "In reality, that's simply not the case. While condensation may collect on the interior or exterior of energy-efficient windows, the units are really doing their job by helping serve as a barrier in the home."

Burk points out that windows do not cause condensation --- they simply prevent the moisture in the home from escaping to the outside. "If the inside glass surface on double- or triple-glazed windows show excessive moisture, you can be reasonably sure that the moisture is also collecting on your walls and ceilings," says Burk. "This means you should take steps to reduce the humidity level in your home by using exhaust fans and dehumidifiers."

Where Does Condensation Come From?
You'd be surprised how much water vapor homeowners create themselves on a daily basis. A family of four can add a half pint of water vapor every hour to the home just through normal breathing and perspiration. And, if you take a five-minute shower, you produce another half pint of water vapor. Even the simple act of cooking dinner on a gas stove can produce two and a half pints of water vapor.*

"Invisible water vapor is everywhere in the home," says Burk. "The key is for homeowners to monitor the levels of moisture in their homes and then take steps to manage the humidity levels."

What Can a Homeowner Do to Help Reduce Condensation?
Water vapor is part of our lives and our homes. To help control the amount of condensation in the home, experts at Simonton Windows recommend the following tips:

• Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans.
• If you have a humidifier, set it to the correct outside temperature.
• If your home is overly humid, or if you have a damp basement, use a dehumidifier.
• Properly vent clothes dryers, gas appliances and stoves.
• Open a window in the bathroom.
• Make sure your attic, basement and crawl spaces are well ventilated and free from obstructions.
• Store firewood outside. Freshly-cut wood can consist of up to 45 percent water, which adds water vapor to the home. Even well-seasoned firewood generally has a 20 to 25 percent moisture content.**
• Open curtains and blinds to allow more air circulation around your windows.

Worrisome Windows
Homeowners with the most cause for concern are those with older, less efficient windows. "Windows are just like any other major part of the home," says Burk. "They wear out over time and need to be replaced. If your windows have air leaks, don't close properly, or are failing to act as a solid barrier to the environment, then it's time to consider replacing them with energy-efficient windows."

Burk also recommends knowing the difference between condensation on the glass and between the glass panes of the window. "If you are seeing moisture, fogging or cloudiness between the panes of glass in your window, this is a strong indication that the seal of your window has failed and it's time to replace your window," says Burk. "In operable window units, a failed seal can often be corrected by simply replacing the sash. However, seal failure reduces energy efficiency and the unit will not work as effectively to help you keep energy bills low and enjoy comfortable living in your home. While condensation on the interior or exterior of the glass is manageable, moisture between the glass needs swift attention by homeowners."

The experts at Simonton Windows offer several free consumer booklets on how to know when it's time to replace your windows, energy efficiency of windows and selecting windows for a new home.

ST. JOSEPH, MI - Despite a challenging economy, builder Greg Powell has experienced growing success in constructing his Cottages at Harbor Shores Hideaway development on the shores of Lake Michigan. With seven units now completed and sold, and seven more under construction, Powell believes his determination to feature only high-performance, low-maintenance products in the homes has led to the project's success.

"We will have 58 homes and a clubhouse in this Jack Nicholas Signature Golf Course community on the Paw Paw River when it's completed," says Powell, owner of Powell Construction Services, LLC out of St. Joseph, MI. "Every one of those homes will feature high-performance Simonton ProFinish® Brickmould 600 windows and patio doors. Many of the entry doors are ENERGY STAR® qualified fiberglass door systems from Therma-Tru. And, the home foundations feature energy-efficient Superior Walls® pre-cast concrete wall panels reinforced with steel and insulated with DOW® StyrofoamTM to create a permanent barrier against sidewall water penetration.

"I've selected the products I would want in my own personal home to assure that the residents here have the ultimate living experience."

Every home in the Cottages at Harbor Shores Hideaway community is being constructed to the NAHB Green Building Standard. The homes are third-party certified Green Built Homes with a Gold Rating, which exceeds the ENERGY STAR Five-Star Plus certification. Powell Construction homes are certified through Green BuiltTM Michigan and follow the national Model Green Home Building Guidelines. The NAHB Green Approved Superior Walls foundations used in the homes are the only foundations approved to contribute points toward certification of a structure under the National Green Building StandardTM.

"Creating an energy-efficient, high-performance home is all about the products you select for the home and the construction practices you employ," says Powell. "These homes are constructed to be just as comfortable during our rough Michigan winters as they are during our perfect summer weather.

"As much as performance is a key goal of ours, aesthetics is also critical when designing and constructing these cottage-style homes. Using the Simonton products with the integral brick mould created as part of each window frame gives us a consistent, stylized look throughout the entire community. Then, complementing those windows with shutters and entry doors that are architecturally appealing with unique accent colors helps us make these cottages stand-out. The glass and color options we selected in the Therma-Tru doors also add to the curb appeal of the home while providing interior accent designs."

The Hideaway Cottages neighborhood developed by Harbor Shores and being exclusively built by Powell Construction is located along the north shore of the Paw Paw River and close to Lake Michigan. Spanning 530 acres and located in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Benton Township, the Harbor Shores development is the first beach and signature golf resort community in southwest Michigan. Cottages in the development (which include the lots) range in price from $350,000 to the $600,000's.

"Maintenance-free living is a key feature of this community," says Powell. "The homeowner association fees cover community maintenance along with landscaping and snow removal. There's so much to do here during every season that homeowners don't want to spend time on the mundane chore of maintaining their home exteriors. On any given day, residents can play golf, enjoy the neighborhood clubhouse, swimming pool, fire pit, or canoe and kayak on the river. We've created a ‘community for life' that truly enhances the lives of its residents."

###

Resources:
Simonton Windows - www.simonton.com
Therma-Tru - www.thermatru.com
Superior Walls - www.superiorwalls.com
Powell Construction - www.powell-construction.com
Cottages at Harbor Shores - www.cottagesatharborshores.com
Harbor Shores Resort - www.harborshoresresort.com
